When Uber first launched everyone saw this coming. It was only a matter of time before the same regulations that made Taxi's so expensive would be applied to Uber. No matter what you call it Uber is a Taxi service. The drivers work for Uber and they have just as much responsibility for their drivers and passengers as a Taxi company. It's actually kind of an indictment of our regulatory system it took them this long to make them play by the same rules as everyone else. Now do AirBnB.

Taxis were expensive not just due to regulations though. High charges for access to radio networks and inflated taxi plate costs played a large part.
